Let’s ask BIG questions in the ELT Classroom (CW9), Certified Workshop
Teachers’ questions constitute an integral part of classroom interaction. Teachers ask questions to scaffold students’ comprehension, evaluate their understanding, elicit information, and manage classrooms. In addition, thought development and reasoning skills can all be fostered through questions. However, studies show that more than two-thirds of questions asked by teachers require only factual recall. This workshop aims at drawing the participants’ attention to the cognitive level of questions they craft and reminds them that questions posed by the teacher not only play an essential role in students’ language development, but also act as engines driving critical thinking.
