Bridging Oral Tradition and Academic Writing (WS37), Workshop
ELLs often develop the skills of listening and speaking more easily than reading and writing. By listening and speaking to others in their target language, they receive immediate feedback based on the interactive nature of spoken communication, including body language, facial expressions and tone of voice.Oral tradition has played an integral part in the Arab culture for many centuries. Therefore, it is only natural that Arabic ELLs would feel more comfortable participating in listening and speaking activities prior to engaging in writing tasks. This workshop will demonstrate bridging oral tradition and academic writing through activities utilizing dictation, transcription, and observation.
